Services

The following services are available to Bell Library researchers:

  • Photocopying
  • Digital Reproduction
  • Other Duplication Services
  • Permission to Publish
  • Research & Reference Services
  • Photocopying

    Library staff will provide photocopies of material when such duplication can be done without injury to the material and does not violate copyright restrictions or restrictions imposed by agreement with the donor. Copies are provided for the researcher's personal use only and are not to be transferred to another individual or institution without the permission of the James Ford Bell Library. Provision of copies does not constitute permission to publish (see below).

    To request photocopying, complete the "copy request" form located in the reading room and give it to a staff member.
    Same-day service is possible, depending on the size of the order and staff availability; next-day service is the norm, but in some cases additional time will be needed. Please ask a staff member before placing your order.

    Photocopy Costs

    8.5" x 11"    35¢ per page
    11" x 17"    50¢ per page

    City and state sales taxes apply; a shipping and handling fee will be applied if you request mail service. Contact a Bell staff member for particulars.

    Digital Reproduction

    Bell Library staff can arrange to have digital images made on your behalf by the University Libraries' Digital Collections Unit; prices are published on their Web site. To take digital pictures with your personal camera, contact a Bell staff member; permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

    Microfilm or other photographic reproduction also can be arranged through outside vendors; contact a Bell staff member for information.

    Permission to Publish

    Permission to publish material from the Bell collection must be obtained in advance of publication and will require a contract with the University of Minnesota Libraries. Fees ranging from $25 to $500 per image may apply. Contact a Bell staff member for more information.

    ATTENTION STUDENTS: Inclusion of images from the Bell collection in class papers, theses, and dissertations does not constitute publication with respect to the fees noted above. However, see above with respect to the costs of duplication.

    Reference & Research Services

  • Reference Services

  • Bell staff members are happy to provide reference services for both Bell collection and Wilson Rare materials. You may request information in person, by phone (612/624-1528) or by e-mail (jfbell@umn.edu). The time required to respond to your query will vary, depending on the nature of the information requested.

  • Research Services

  • The Bell Library offers limited research services based on staff availability and the nature of the inquiry. Research requiring more than 1 hour will be charged at the rate of $25 per hour, in increments of 1/4-hour after the first hour.
