Peter Rindisbacher

Peter Rindisbacher was born in Switzerland in 1806. His father, a not very successful farmer, encouraged his son’s interests in drawing with charcoal and crayon. When Peter was twelve his father gave him watercolors and arranged for some art lessons. Dreams of a better life led the Rindisbachers to emigrate in 1821 to Selkirk’s Red River Colony (established in 1811). Thus Peter lived in Winnipeg and Pembina for seven years, where he sketched and painted scenes that he witnessed daily. He then moved to St. Louis, where he died at the age of twenty-eight.*
