Jens Munk

Middleton, Christopher, d. 1770. To the King. This chart of Hudson's Bay and Straits, Baffin's Bay, Strait Davis & Labrador coast &c. is most humbly dedicated. [London] C. Middleton, 1743.

Like Munk, Middleton searched for a northwest passage. At the top of the map, which is west, Middleton writes: "In this bay John Monk 'tis said winter'd in the year 1619, but I rather think it was in Churchill River, from the marks of a wreck of a Danish ship & some brass & copper guns I took up in the year 1722, with X.stian the 4th upon'em dated 1610." He was right. Munk believed that since Churchill, Manitoba was a few degrees south latitude from Bergen, Norway the winter would be similar to Bergen's. What Munk did not know was that the Gulf stream bathes the Norwegian coast and keeps the winter mild, the harbors ice free. On the edge of Hudson Bay, Munk and his crew were completely unprepared for the full force of a Canadian arctic winter.

Woodcut illustration showing the preparations for waiting out the winter. The health of the men remained good until after December when scurvy and possibly trichinosis began to take their toll. This is the first edition of Munk’s book.

Drie voyagien gedaen na Groenlandt. Amsterdam, G.J. Saeghman [1663]

Munk's voyage was included in this Dutch collection of travel accounts to Greenland. In the woodcut shown here King Christian IV says farewell to Munk in the harbor of Copenhagen. In addition to Munk's voyage Christian sponsored other voyages, several to reestablish contact with Norse settlements in Greenland.

La Peyrere, Isaac de, 1594-1676. Nauwkeurige beschrijvingh van Groenland. Amsterdam, J.C. ten Hoorn, 1678.

Munk's expedition to Hudson Bay is a major part of this first Dutch edition of La Peyrere's history of Greenland. The work includes this wonderful engraving of Munk's map illustrated with four scenes of Arctic life. At this time the Dutch were interested in whaling northern waters.
