Saint John is the smallest island of the Virgin Island group.
This large scale map by Oxholm provides information on Saint
John's topography, hydrography, population and economy. Windmills
and horse farms are located and a table of statistics for
products such as rum and cotton is given. The previous year Oxholm
published an even larger map for the more important
island of Saint Croix.
A much more substantial description of the Danish Virgin Islands
by the head of the West Indian School in Copenhagen. For a
time West was also a superintendent of Saint Croix schools. The
work includes several foldout tables which provide additional
information on the islands.
Oxholm was an official of the Danish West Indian government and
in order to provide a description of the islands published this
book consisting mostly of statistical information. Windmills provided
the power to grind the sugarcane.
