Saint John is the smallest island of the Virgin Island group. This large scale map by Oxholm provides information on Saint John's topography, hydrography, population and economy. Windmills and horse farms are located and a table of statistics for products such as rum and cotton is given. The previous year Oxholm published an even larger map for the more important island of Saint Croix.

A much more substantial description of the Danish Virgin Islands by the head of the West Indian School in Copenhagen. For a time West was also a superintendent of Saint Croix schools. The work includes several foldout tables which provide additional information on the islands.

Oxholm was an official of the Danish West Indian government and in order to provide a description of the islands published this book consisting mostly of statistical information. Windmills provided the power to grind the sugarcane.
