Hennepin and Carver, Two Early European Explorers of Minnesota

Minnesota place names have an interesting history, which is well documented in the book by Warren Upham (1850-1934) titled Minnesota geographic names; their origin and historic significance. The Minnesota Historical Society has just recently published a new edition of this important reference work. The Society has also made it accessible in electronic format at their web site:

Some of the names are traced to the early European explorers of this area. The commentaries here include illustrations and maps from books by Father Louis Hennepin and Captain Jonathan Carver, together with their biographies.

Research Assistant Ann Myers prepared these commentaries in the summer of 2001. We are pleased to share the results of her research on our web site.
