Leardo, Giovanni

World Map. Manuscript. Venice, 1452 or 1453. Facsimile. New York, American Geographical Society, 1928. 72.4 x 59.4 cm.

A planisphere centered on Jerusalem, with east at the top of the map, the ocean encircling the land mass of Europe, Asia, and Africa. A calendar surrounds the map. The map’s contents reflect classical and medieval geographical concepts and some influence of late medieval navigation charts. Information on Russia is merged with material from Marco Polo and a variety of legendary sources pertaining to Asia.
